Ghana is producing potential candidates for the Hague -Harruna Atta
Ghanaian politicians who are using intemperate language as a
means of gaining political will could as well be writing their own dockets which
could be used as evidence against them at the International Criminal Court
(ICC) should their actions and inactions throw the country into mayhem.
The warning which came from the Ghanaian chapter of PEN
International, a human rights advocating body, said it is in the process of
compiling reports of acts of intimidation, violence and impunity in relation to
election 2012 that could be used as evidence at the ICC should Ghana be thrown
into a state of disarray.
Throwing more light on e.tv Ghana’s morning show, Awake,
editor of The Accra Mail and President of PEN International Ghana, Mr Harruna
Atta, said for the first time in the fourth republic he has never seen any
election characterized by desperation from the two main political “protagonist”.
He observed that the state of tension and violence being
brewed in the country was as a result of the aggressive politicking being
pursued by a cross section of politicians and media practitioners.
He noted that the National Media Commission (NMC) has not
doing its best to ensure sanity on the airwaves.
Mr Harruna Atta further observed that “certainly someone has
to answer for any action should Ghana be pushed to the brink as was done in
Cote d’Ivoire.”
Although the constitution frowns on media censorship, Mr
Atta said the NMC could take a step further to investigate and sanction media
houses which are brewing tension and inciting violence among the populace.
He, therefore, called on all well meaning Ghanaians,
especially politicians to be cautious in their speeches. “Our language should
be a language of peace, reconciliation and unity,” he added.
Meanwhile, civil society groups and institutions have condemned
the rising tension and violence characterizing the ongoing biometric
registration and have called on political parties to bring their supporters to
order to avoid any unforeseen events in the future.
