"'Hot Fork' is a gospel movie" -Socrates Safo
Film Producer and Chief
Executive Officer of Movie Africa, Socrates Safo has damned and
described his movie critics as “ignorant”.
He said, “People who complain about my movies are ignorant because they fail to read the synopses which come with my movies.”
According to him, his movies are all religious ones and not based on sex and nudity as perceived by some sections of the public.
The controversial producer who is known for his famous movies with sensational titles such as Hot Fork, Sexy Angel, Love and Sex and Sons of Satan
has been heavily criticized by some sections of the public who claim
his movies do not portray and uphold the values of the Ghanaian culture.
Socrates who was speaking on e.tv Ghana’s morning show, Awake, said “All my movies, I will say are gospel movies, from Hot Fork to Love and Sex to Sexy Angel.
You see, people don’t think deep. If you watch Hot Fork, it is deeper.
The Bible talk about patience and tolerance and that is what the movie
talks about.”
Asked whether Adults Only is
also a gospel movie, this is what Socrates had to say, “it talks about
responsible parenthood. The problem is people don’t think deep”.
Socrates noted that he writes scripts which are based on the “gospel” and are expected to send a message across to his viewers.
Justifying his title’s he said, “If you
are not ignorant you will understand what I’m doing. There is no way you
have to take something and jump on to it. You must read the synopsis
before u will understand it.”
Explaining the motives behind the
sensational titles, Socrates explained that as a movie producer, it was
important to be creative and play around words.
Contrary to what people might think, he
said he had come out with other “good” productions where he had to “beg”
people to watch.
One of which he said was Subcity
which revolved around the life and people of Bukom, a suburb of Accra.
According to him, “this is a film I couldn’t even sell 500 copies.”
He was quick to attribute the knock down
in sales to the probability of the movie not containing “porn and
probably because it did not have a sensational title”.
Asked about the timing of movies which
portray obscenity, Socrates partly blamed the media (television
stations) for showing movies at a time when children were likely to be
glued to the television set.
According to him, most of his movies are
age classified and therefore, “it is the responsibility of TV station
managers to play their part and show the movies at the right time.”
Socrates also disclosed that he is currently working on a new production titled Amen, a story he says, confirms that his movies preach the gospel.
The movie, according to him, revolves
around a pastor who was cheating on his wife with his house help and was
later found dead in a hotel room.
The wife of the deceased who also
engages the services of an investigator also ends up having an affair
with him (the investigator).
However, upon finding out the cause of the death of her husband, she drops the case as a way of a pay-back to the deceased.
The movie, according to him, will be premiered sometime in July in America before it is released in Ghana at a later date.
