CALL GOVT OFFICIALS TO ORDER — NUGS URGE PREZ (DAILY GRAPHIC)

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr Anthony Abotsi Afriyie, has called on the President, Prof John Evans Atta-Mills to call the government officials who have involved themselves in the activities of NUGS to order.
He said these government officials namely, Mr Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, Deputy Minister of Information,Dr J. S Annan, Deputy Minister of Education and Mr Mahmud Khalid, the erstwhile Upper West Regional Minister had tried to manipulate and control the student leadership body in the country.
He said the involvement of these government officials in the affairs of NUGS was creating a scuffle among members of the Union.
Mr Afriyie explained that the dilemma began when the Mr Okudjeto Ablakwa involved himself during the 2010/2011 SRC elections at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the involvement of Dr J. S. Annan who instructed that this year's NUGS congress be hheld at the Jehans Training College in Wa.
He added that Dr J. S. Annan had also involved himself overtly to determine a representative of NUGS at the All African Student's Union Secretariat against a representative who was duly elected at the 42nd Annual Delegates Congress.
Mr Afriyie said in an attempt the police were actively involved with assistance from the Municipal Commander of Police in Wa to offer protection with arms, tear gas and water cannons at the illegal emergency congress, adding that, "these arer clear cases of imploring the state security apparatus to intimidate and interfere in the affairs of law abiding students".
He said the state in which the police gave immediate attention to the issues of NUGS at the said illegal emergency congress was overwhelming since it did not occupy the topmost position of the scale of prefernce of the police when there were reports and instances of armed robbery, car snatching and incessant breakage of traffic regulations by motorists.
He therefore called on the Inspector General of Police to use the same enthusiasm with which they attend to issues of NUGS to address the security concerns of the country.
Mr Afriyie declined the claim made by Mr Okudjeto Ablakwa that NUGS had been given an office complex.
He therefore appealed that all energies within the government would be geared towards attaining the "Better Ghana Agenda" set by the Government so that all including students would be motivated to contribute their quota towards the development of the country.
Mr Afriyie stated categorically that he still remained the only president of NUGS with seven other national officers with the exception of the General Secretary, Mr Patrick Adonoo and the International Relations Secretary, Miss Benedicta Lasi who per the Central Committee were awaiting clearance from the Judicial Board and advised any individual who claimed to be the Acting President to desist from doing so or risk being prosecuted by NUGS.
