Ghana Health Awards launched

THE first Ghana Health Awards that seeks to honour health institutions and individuals for promoting health care delivery in the country has been launched in Accra.
The awards scheme also seeks to build a sense of patriotism and professionalism in health care professionals.
To qualify for an award, Ghanaian health professionals would nominate colleagues, hospitals, clinics or other health care service providers that deserve recognition for outstanding performance, contribution, achievements and the level of professionalism exhibited in delivering quality health care services in the country.
After this a panel of judges would review the entries and shortlist nominees for the various categories.
Regional and national awards will be given to the best hospital and clinic, best private hospital and clinic, best doctor, nurse, best midwife and best laboratory technician.
Other awards will include the best hospital or clinic in child care, best hospital or clinic in maternal health, best hospital administrator and best in ambulance service.
The organisers hope that subsequent events would cover other segments of the health sector that may not have been included.
The awards scheme is being organised by the AnG Unimedia, an event management organisation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
The Director of AnG Unimedia, Mr Nicholas King Amenyedzi, said, "Health care delivery can be guided and developed not only through legislation and practice but also through recognition and rewards as was done in other sectors in the country".
He added that the award, which would be held annually would honour the very best in health care service delivery, encourage and promote positive development of health care service delivery in the country.
That, he said, would help position and strengthen the role of health care delivery in the country.
Mr Amenyedzi said some of the benefits that the award winners would get included positioning themselves as industry leaders in specialist health care delivery in the country.
He said the award winners would also have an opportunity to boost employee morale and increase opportunities with new customers, investors and partners.
He, therefore, appealed for the support of individuals and institutions, who were interested in the growth and development of the country, to make the country a healthier and better place to grow businesses.
The Administrator of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Mr Abraham Bortei, lauded AnG Unimedia for instituting the awards scheme that aimed at recognising the efforts of health care institutions and individuals in the country.
He said for the past years, the health sector had received unfavourable recognition due to unpleasant developments in the sector.
He expressed the belief that the awards would go a long way to motivate health workers, as they knew that their activities were being seen and recognised.
He said the awards could not be a reward for all the good work done by health institutions and individuals but was only a token of recognition.
Mr Bortei, therefore, cautioned the award winners not to be complacent, adding that "it is rather supposed to encourage you to work even harder and to motivate others to similarly work harder".
The National Treasurer of the Ghana Registered Midwives Association (GRMA), Mrs Gifty Mantey, also commended the organisers for instituting such an awards scheme.
She said: "It is a laudable achievement that needs support so health care centres will regain their proper image".
She called on all health service providers to put in their best effort to improve health care delivery in the country.
