EC DEFERS PRISON REGISTRATION BUT WON'T EXTEND DEADLINE

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it has in consultation with the prison authorities deferred the registration of prisoners in the ongoing biometric voter registration until further notice.

A statement issued by Acting Director of Public Affairs, Christian Owusu-Parry in Accra said the deferment has become necessary to give the prison authorities ample time to resolve issues regarding the true identities of some of the inmates.

The statement said the Commission will make the necessary arrangements to register the prisoners as soon as the matter is resolved.

Meanwhile, the EC has categorically stated that it will not extend the biometric voter registration exercise despite calls from various political parties and civil society groups for an extension of the date.

According to the acting Public Relations Officer of the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Parry, the large numbers of Ghanaians registered, indicate that an extension of the registration will be unnecessary.

“Just at the beginning of the exercise there were reports of shortage of registration forms, quickly the commission mobilized over two million forms and so there have been no complains of registration problems,” he added.

Although the exercise has been faced with challenges, the EC says the registration process has been smooth.

So far, the EC says it has registered over 10 million eligible voters and has detected 8,000 double registrations in the ongoing registration exercise with the highest number emerging from the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The exercise which started on March 24, 2012 is expected to end on May 5, 2012.
