GHANA SHEDS TEARS FOR LATE PRESIDENT MILLS
Tributes are pouring in from the length and breadth of Ghana as the country begins the first day of funeral rites of former President John Evans Atta Mills.
The tributes which are being sent mainly via social media platforms still express shock on the solemn event which is currently taking place at the State House in Accra.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, major roads in the capital were blocked to allow the free flow of traffic of the remains of the president to his private home at Spintex, then to the Castle and finally to the State House where it is currently being laid in state for the public to pay their last respect to the ex-president.
Since the passing away of President John Evans Atta Mills on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, Ghanaians have not stopped paying tribute to the late president.
The untimely death of the late president has to some extent unified the country and has calmed the heat which was building up prior to the elections which is almost four months away.
A book of condolence was opened at various stations in the country for the public to pay tribute to the late president. However, for some who couldn't get the opportunity to do so, they took advantage of social media platforms;Facebook and Twitter to pay their last respect to the former first gentleman of the land.
Some of the messages on facebook read:
The mood on twitter was no different as Ghanaians and the entire world mourned with the family of the late president.
Meanwhile, the entire country has been “painted red” as streets; buildings, trees and the like have all been decorated in red and black to commemorate the passing away and burial of the late president.
Formal and non-formal workers are also clad in black; at e.tv Ghana, the mood is solemn. Work, however, is going on smoothly in parts of the country.
